I was working with a young lady the other day (5th grader) on a project she is doing for class on Inupiat culture. She was Googling about food, dress, culture and pulled off pictures for her poster. She didn’t know to credit the photographers or writers. I think with new Internet technology, it will be too hard to keep people from utilizing what is already on the Web. Good luck trying to stop the dam from breaking!

I’ve realized that I know just enough to scratch the surface of dreamweaver and fireworks. It helps to do practical application of what we’re learning. I put together a CSS style sheet in my project and this was fun–it took me awhile to remember how to do it (we studied it so long ago)!

I’m needing to spend time on practicing, but realize that I will need to continue learning and practicing before I can publish a full new Web page for the world. Lots of use of the UNDO button!

It’s important to focus on design–saves time down the road. I thought by the end of this class, I’d be ready to completely change the CS Web site. After 16 weeks, I realized that Web pages take a lot of pages and attention to detail and understanding of code and procedures. We’ll see if I have time in my job to do this or at least get a rough draft of a new design and contract it out. Anyone interested?

When I was at my conference last week, I went to a workshop on Internet technology and how to update college Web sites. I hope to integrate some of what I learned. Colorado State University was touted as having a great Website which is very clean, easy to maneuver around, and has very useful information. I encourage students to take a look and give me feedback for what they would like to see on the UAF Career Services’ Web site.

Are young adults aimless, clueless, directionless, and directed?

I went to a conference last week: Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers. Phil Gardner, a researcher from Michigan State University presented at the conference on recruiting trends for students and employers. He talked about the 18-28 year olds-both positive and negative characteristics. I have included a link to a powerpoint presentation he gave in Wisconsin (similar to what he presented on at my conference). I’m curious to see what UAF 18-28 year olds (and their parents) think about what has emerged in his research–if it rings true or not. He categorizes 18-28 year olds as: Aimless, Clueless, Directionless, and Directed.

I was happy to hear that people in this age group will be able to change the world given their networking (social and technical) abilities and interest in the world around them.

Tired of receiving catalogs in the mail?

On PBS a couple weeks ago, Bill Moyer, talked about a Web site where you can ask them to take you off lists of companies who send you catalogs: http://www.catalogchoice.org. Save the mailing address of the companies you want to stop sending you catalogs, go to that Web site, make some clicks and you won’t receive them again. Such a deal!

The mission of Catalog Choice is to reduce the number of repeat and unsolicited catalog mailings, and to promote the adoption of sustainable industry best practices. We aim to accomplish this by freely providing the Catalog Choice services to both consumers and businesses. Consumers can indicate which catalogs they no longer wish to receive, and businesses can receive a list of consumers no longer wanting to receive their catalogs.They have provided html code to place on your websites to let others know about the service:

Most interesting has been using the vector tools to create shapes like the peppermint candy exercise. I also liked cloning and erasing parts of an image. At the beginning of each lesson and segment, the authors tell us what we will be doing before giving the detailed instructions which is helpful. It helps to know that even though I scale the pictures down on a Web page, the original size of the image is going to be downloaded unless I crop it earlier in an image editor, like fireworks, photoshop, etc.

Most frustrating: I wasn’t sure how to deselect “fit canvas”, but later in the chapter, they went over it. I finally figured out how to select the shape tools (hold down the mouse after clicking)!

I’m looking forward to completing more of the lessons like creating buttons.

When browsing other career service sites, I saw this one with info on internships (not specific ones) but more general info about what an internship is, responsibilities of students/employers/dept advisers, quotes from students interns, list of employers utilizing interns. Some ideas for me.
